What Is A Dental Crown

What Is A Dental Crown?

Dental Crown

A dental crown is a cap your dentist is putting over a tooth. The purpose of the crown is to restore the tooth to its normal size, function, and shape.

With the dental crown’s help, it will make your tooth become stronger and improve the way your teeth look. You may get a crown if you have a large cavity or a cracked tooth. You can also have it if you had a root canal treatment because the dental crown can protect your restored tooth.

Materials Used In Dental Crowns

A dental crown is made out of various materials of ceramics, porcelain fused to metal, composite resin, or porcelain. When a crown is being made, it would blend in with your natural teeth.

It’s the dentist who will decide what kind of material may be used for the crown because of these factors: location and function of the tooth, the position of the gum tissue, the color shade of your tooth, and the amount of tooth that appears when you smile.

The Process Of Placing The Dental Crown

It takes 2 dental visits to complete the treatment and to place the dental crown over the natural tooth, there are 4 steps to follow.

First, your dentist will prepare the tooth by removing the outer part of the tooth so the crown will fit. Also, the decay will be removed from your teeth and if there’s a needed material to add up to support your crown, then the dentist will build up the tooth’s core.

Second, the dentist will make an exact model of the dental crown that was digitally scanned from your tooth. Third, you may be getting a temporary crown for two weeks because the permanent crown takes a longer time to be ready. Since the temporary crown is too sensitive for temperature.

Fourth, when the permanent crown is ready, the dentist will place it in your mouth and make adjustments if there is.

How To Take Care Of Your Teeth

Dental crowns can also break just like a natural tooth if not taken care of. Also, you have to take note that the crown might get cavities and damages. To avoid these unfortunate events, you have to constantly brush your teeth at least twice a day and clean between your teeth every day.

Look for a good and reliable oral product brand that has an American Dental Association’s Seal of Acceptance on it. It only means that this product had met the standards of ADA. Next is to avoid chewing hard foods, such as candies and meat, or other hard objects, like pencils. Always go to your dentist at least once a month and have it cleaned.

Taking care of your teeth is a vital part of hygiene, so to avoid damaging your natural tooth, you must also be mindful. Brush your teeth at least twice a day or floss it around the crown area daily. For more information on how to take care of it, you can always ask your dentist for a follow-up.
